Empowering Education (Overview)
Beginning with $40,000 of “seed money” a decade ago, the Carrollton City Schools Education Foundation has more than tripled its worth to become a six-figure non-profit that is able to make substantial awards each year to support instructional excellence.

To date, the foundation has awarded more than $80,000 to teachers through classroom grants, $25,000 for at-risk and gifted education programs and continues to serve as a tax-exempt clearinghouse for other school organizations. The foundation also administers five scholarship programs and was the driving force behind EmpowerLink, a school-to-home community network public housing collaboration.

Empowering Teachers (Grants Program)
The Carrollton City Schools Education Foundation’s primary focus is to enhance classroom instruction. The foundation’s trademark is the Instructional Excellence Grant program, which has awarded more than $80,000 directly to teachers for classroom instruction over the past decade. The foundation also presents the Dudley Crosson Excellence in Teaching award, a $500 grant, each year to the school system’s Teacher of the Year. Other grant programs funded in the past have targeted specific groups of students, from the at-risk academically to the gifted.

Empowering Community (EmpowerLink)
Through a collaboration with Carrollton City Schools, the Carrollton Housing Authority and the City of Carrollton, the Carrollton City Schools Education Foundation spearheaded EmpowerLink, the only school-to-home computer network of its kind in the nation. With the first phase now complete, approximately 25 homes with school-age children are closer to closing the educational gap between the “haves” and the “have-nots” through technological resources such as home computers, the Carrollton City Schools network of learning tools & software, and the Internet.

The Carrollton City Schools Education Foundation contributed the first $20,000 to the project and raised the balance through grants and other funding sources.

Empowered by Funding (How to Contribute)
The Carrollton City Schools Education Foundation depends on annual contributions and other funding resources to be able to provide a high level of grant support to the school system. Five programs, in particular, provide unique opportunities for giving:
Annual Fund – Yearly contributions made to the foundation provide general funding support for grant programs and special needs.

Employee-Giving Program – Currently, employes of Carrollton City Schools contribute collectively about $10,000 a year to help fund the Instructional Excellence Grant program.

Water Bill Roundup – City of Carrollton water customers can have their water bills “rounded up” to the next even dollar amount, with the difference donated to the foundation and the city’s recreation department to fund programs for at-risk children.

Teacher of Honor Tribute – Contributions made in a teacher’s honor support the foundation’s general fund. Honor recipients receive a decal highlighting the recognition.

Scholarships – The foundation accepts donations to existing scholarship endowments and establishes new ones as opportunities arise. Currently, there are five scholarships administered by the foundation:

  • The Whitley Morris Scholar-Athlete Scholarship – Established by the estate of Whitley Morris, a scholar-athlete at Carrollton High School in the early 1900s.
  • The Don Hall Band Scholarship – Established in honor of the legendary CHS band director who retired in 1998.
  • The Charlie Grisham Memorial Scholarship – Established in memory of the legendary head football coach and athletic director.
  • The John Wesley Tanner Jr. Scholarship – Established by his family to honor the memory of the Carrollton native and successful businessman.
  • The Trojan Spirit and Leadership Scholarship – Established as a tribute to Doyle and Margaret Garrett by their children.
  • Contributions to any of the above programs can be made to:
