CARROLLTON, GA — Six Carrollton High School students who were nominated to compete at the state level for Governor’s Honors have cleared the next hurdle by being named semifinalists.

The Governor’s Honors Program, known as GHP, is a four-week residential summer program for gifted and talented rising high school juniors and seniors.  Students who attend public, private, and home schools are eligible for nomination in one of more than 20 subject areas.

Allie Grace Ashlock, Tyler Clotfelter, Kaia Maggiano, Yadiel Pilar Enriquez, Lissa Sajche, and Lucy Slappey will represent CHS as the remaining six nominees out of the 16 students selected to participate. Allie will compete in Dance, Tyler in Music, Lucy in Communicative Arts, and Kaia, Yadiel, and Lissa in World Languages, where Kaia will focus on German while Yadiel and Lissa will compete for Spanish.

CHS counselor Shae Holland has guided students through the nomination process for the past nine years. She shared that the experience is rewarding, as students blossom in their areas of interest.

The students will now prepare to be named finalists for the program, which includes an application and personal interview process. GHP finalists will be announced later this spring, and the program will be held June 14 through July 11 at Georgia Southern University in Statesboro.

“All of our GHP semifinalists have demonstrated excellence in their designated interest areas. As they take on this next round of applications and interviews, I know they will continue to do their best,” CHS Principal Ian Lyle said. “I am incredibly proud of their hard work.”
